You may search every library, archive and museum collection to which Arena has access. The search includes records for all available media types, such as library and museum catalogue records, archives, collections, in the following three categories:
- library record
- museum record
- archive record
It also searches articles. For example, if you search Arena for harry potter, your search results may include Harry Potter books in various formats, DVDs, scripts, articles, museum artifacts, and so on.
If your search finds nothing, Arena will do a fuzzy search for you, automatically. A fuzzy search tries to find records that closely (but not exactly) match your search criteria. For example, if you searched for pottre but found nothing, Arena will do a fuzzy search, and will find close matches, such as potter. This feature does not apply to Extended Search.

- In the search text box, type the text you want to find. For example, if you are searching for Harry Potter, type harry potter. It does not matter whether you use uppercase or lowercase letters.
- Select Records or Articles, depending on what you want to find.
- Click Search.
- See Search results.
You may specify an author or title in your search by using the special author and title keywords. The following examples show how to enter these searches:
- author:larsson will find items where the author name includes larsson (records and articles).
- author:jane austen will find items where the author name includes jane austen (records and articles).
- title:potter will find items where the title includes potter (records only).
- title:pride prejudice will find items where the title includes pride and prejudice(records only).

- Click Extended search. The extended search form will appear in the centre panel.
- Use the extended search filters and fields to define your search and filter your search results.

Depending on the view type and Arena configuration, the search filters and fields may be combined with a Boolean AND, except publication year, where OR is used. For example, if you specify the language English and title potter, the search will find records in which the language is English and the title includes potter.
As you choose your search criteria and filter, the search query will appear in coded form in the Search query box. You may select this, copy it to Windows clipboard, and then paste it into the Search box later, to repeat this search using the search feature.

When search results are found in multiple formats (media types) in multiple locations, they will be grouped by location and media type automatically. For example, if a title is available in book format at one library branch, and DVD format at another library branch, the results will be grouped into tabs - one tab for each library branch, and grouped by media type within each tab. You may also share the item details on services such as Facebook and Twitter, or like or Recommend the item on Facebook, if these features are enabled in your installation of Arena. To learn more see Social Networking.
[edit] How to limit your search results
You may limit a search by using the Limit Search To panel. This filters out unwanted search results. For example, you may be interested only in items at a specific library branch, or certain publication year. The number in brackets beside each item indicates the number of items which correspond to it. For example, in the Language section, if English has (25) beside it, then 25 of the search results contain this language property; by clicking this item, the search results will be limited to these 25 items.
- Locate the Limit Search To panel.
- Click the item that you want to limit the search results to.
- Repeat step 2 (above) to filter the search results further.
